Creative Writing
About the programme
The B.A. in Creative Writing offers students with an interest in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction the opportunity to join an international community of authors, publishers, artists, translators, and critics. Students in the ‘Creative Arts’ track bring writing into dialogue with other arts and media. Our program is unique in encouraging students to shape their insights and the depth of their writing by exploring more than one genre and by appreciating the nuances of language and culture through exposure to literary translation.
The two tracks in the Major create a broad forum within which students relate academic study to their own creative production. They gain broad and rigorous knowledge of literature in its historical and geographical contexts. That knowledge is coupled with close analysis of the details of literary production and well-informed attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. This background is crucial to raising the quality of student writing and workshop discussion.
In classes taught by literary and artistic practitioners, students produce original work, develop creative and professional skills, and acquire the capacity to reflect upon, analyze, and evaluate their own work. They follow a program of increasingly advanced workshops while being mentored individually by faculty and their advisor. They develop and articulate a personal focus for their reading and their creative production, which culminates in a portfolio combining academic and creative work, and a senior project in the final year.
