Dubai
Dubai is an emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A city within the emirate is also named Dubai. The emirate is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and has the largest population with the second-largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi. Dubai City is located on the emirate's northern coastline. Today, Dubai City has emerged as a global city and a business hub. Although Dubai's economy was built on the oil industry, the emirate's model of business drives its economy, with the effect that its main revenues are now from tourism, real estate, and financial services, similar to that of Western countries.
Dubai has a very hot arid climate. Summers in Dubai are extremely hot, windy and humid, with an average high around 42 °C and overnight lows around 29 °C. Most days are sunny throughout the year. Winters are warm with an average high of 23 °C. Tourism is an important part of the Dubai government's strategy to maintain the flow of foreign cash into the emirate. Dubai's lure for tourists is based mainly on shopping, but also on its possession of other ancient and modern attractions. The city boasts more than 70 shopping malls, including the world's largest shopping mall, Dubai Mall.
Moreover the city offers a rich collection of buildings and structures of various architectural styles. Many modern interpretations of Islamic architecture can be found here, due to a boom in construction and architectural innovation in the Arab World in general, and in Dubai in particular, supported not only by top Arab or international architectural and engineering design firms such as Al Hashemi and Aedas, but also by top firms of New York and Chicago. As a result of this boom, modern Islamic – and world – architecture has literally been taken to new levels in skyscraper building design and technology for instance with the completion of the Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower), now by far the world's tallest building at 829.84 m (2,722.57 ft).
Being a popular touristic city, Dubai has a well-developed transportation system. Not only a large bus and metro system can be found, also an extensive taxi network is available. Moreover the city has its own airport, Dubai International Airport, offering a variety of destinations to go to.
