Helping Students Make the Right International HE Choices
A conference to help higher education advisors make sense of an ever expanding world of opportunity for their students.
Tuesday 9th June 2015 - London conference at Istituto Marangoni
Wednesday 10th June 2015 - Birmingham conference at Aston University
** Please note we have had to postpone the Birmingham conference due to the threatened, and now cancelled, RMT train strike.**
By now it is fair to say that the benefit of international experience is widely understood. When even Bill Gates defines his biggest regret as not learning a language, and where Google’s guidelines for hiring new recruits suggest preparedness for life in the 21st century is more important than any narrow skillset, it is quite clear that encouraging students to engage with the wider world makes sense both personally and professionally.
As the range of higher education options becomes both more complex and accessible to British students, how can we point them in the right direction, particularly when most paths abroad are not yet well established and evidence of successful outcomes is largely anecdotal? The aim of this conference is to offer some guidance to this key question.
For some students, leaving home at 18 and spending three years integrating in another country will be the best option. For others, an exchange programme or a double degree in two locations might make more sense. Would work experience abroad be a better idea than studying abroad or would a combination of both be the right idea? There is plentiful evidence to suggest that students who travel once will continue to do so in the future, often seeking out more adventurous destinations as they develop. However, what should that first step be?
