About the programme

The Major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics takes its inspiration from the long-established and highly successful PPE degree offered at the University of Oxford. Its specificity at The American University of Paris lies in its integrated approach, with courses across the three disciplines mutually reinforcing each other.

Beyond receiving introductions to the main concepts and theories within philosophy, politics and economics, students majoring in PPE will advance their ability to think broadly and critically, to see how different modes of analysis interact, and what their respective merits and limits are. PPE aims to equip students with the analytical tools that allow for the (de-)construction of “big pictures” on crucial contemporary phenomena such as globalization, democratization or development, and for the evaluation of how policy choices affect human development.

Example courses:

  • The critique of Political Economy: From Adam Smith to Karl Marx
  • Philosophy and the City
  • Environmental Ethics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Principles of Microeconomics
  • Principles of Macroeconomics
